Why Do Adults Still Watch Cartoons?

Do You Still Watch Cartoons as an Adult?

It's no secret that watching cartoons isn't just reserved for children. Adults all over the world still enjoy the simplicity, charm, and sometimes even the profound storytelling that animated series and films offer. From nostalgic favorites to modern classics, these shows can serve as a retreat to a simpler time or a gateway into complex universes. In this article, we explore why many adults continue to embrace the world of cartoons, from the comfort of their couches even while raising their own young ones.

The Enduring Charm of Animated Films

My Nostalgic Journey

For me, the journey into the world of cartoons began during my childhood. My love for The Lion King has stayed with me into adulthood, solidifying its place on my list of favorite animated films.

Other favorites from my childhood include Aladdin, the sultan's son in The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride, and Prince Adam, the protagonist in Beauty and the Beast. While my passion for animated films waned a bit with my transition into live-action movies like Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, the nostalgic pull of cartoons never left me.

Returning to Cartoons

Even today, when I feel the need to retreat or simply unwind, I frequently turn to cartoons for a dose of laughter and entertainment. I often watch them with my children, finding joy in the simplicity and wonder they offer. Meanwhile, when I want to indulge myself, I revisit The Simpsons, Futurama, and other animated series that I secretly know I can't resist.

Adulting with Cartoons

Many adults, even those older than 68, share a similar fondness for cartoons. These shows aren't just for kids; they offer a unique kind of escapism and entertainment that resonates with a wide age range.

South Park and the Simpsons

One of the modern cartoons that I've grown to love is South Park. Created for an adult audience, it offers sharp satire and biting humor that aligns well with the maturing mind's taste for critical commentary. I often find myself revisiting the early seasons, while the later ones tend to be less enjoyable for me.

Another classic, The Simpsons, holds a special place in my heart. However, the later seasons, with their suffering plotlines and over-long running times, have made them less appealing to me in recent years. In contrast, the first three seasons of The Boondocks are still fresh and fun, while the last season left me feeling disappointed.

Nostalgia Revived

Other animated series from my youth reignite my joy and nostalgia whenever I watch them. Batman: The Animated Series and its successor Justice League often become go-to shows for me. Even Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain continue to be laugh-out-loud classics. I can't resist revisiting the classic series such as Bullwinkle, Rocky and His Lone Star Pals, and The George of the Jungle. The adventures of Duckman, Futurama, and Samurai Jack also keep me engaged and entertained.

Adult-Centric Cartoons

Lastly, we can't overlook the presence of explicitly adult cartoons such as Family Guy and American Dad. These animated series push the boundaries of what was considered appropriate for children and offer a blend of humor and satire that appeals to a more mature audience.

Global Appeal of Cartoons

While the west is replete with shows that cater to adults, Japan's anime industry offers a wealth of content for everyone. Anime shows often span a wide spectrum, from young children to older adults, proving that there's something for everyone in the world of animation.
