The Value of Authenticity: Benefits of Appearing Older Than You Are

Many times, individuals are tempted to alter their age either for personal gain or to fit into certain social or professional scenarios. However, there are very little benefits to lying about your age, and faking it can lead to serious consequences.

The Motives Behind Altering Age

There are several reasons why people might choose to lie about their age:

To appear mature enough to enter age-restricted events like bars during the 1970s when such venues still used ID cards. To secure better job opportunities as young employees often have fewer responsibilities and higher flexibility in the workplace. In some cases, to take advantage of children's benefits or discounts that aren't available to adults.

One notable example is an incident with my husband's mother, who altered his birth certificate to make him appear one year younger. This was done to help him qualify for a youth job with the state at an earlier age.

The Risks of Lying about Age

The flaw in these actions lies in the potential risks and ethical considerations. When young individuals use counterfeit or altered ID, they often find themselves in serious trouble. Their actions can lead to dangerous situations and, in some cases, legal repercussions.

The Benefits of Being True to One's Age

On the other hand, there are significant benefits to embracing the maturity and wisdom that comes with age:

Respect and Trust: People tend to trust and respect older individuals more, as age often brings with it a certain level of wisdom and experience. Opportunities: The older you are, the more life experiences you have, leading to greater opportunities for mentorship and leadership roles. Confidence: Authenticity fosters confidence, allowing you to navigate life with a sense of security and self-assurance.

Most importantly, being authentic promotes a healthier sense of self and leads to more meaningful relationships as people appreciate genuine interactions over fabricated ones.

Reflections on Honesty and Integrity

While honesty may not always be seen as a prevalent value in today's society, integrity remains an invaluable trait. Politicians, salespeople, and preachers often thrive on deception, but such dishonesty is ultimately exploitative and sad.

Young people may seek to appear older for various reasons, but faking one's age never brings real benefits. Instead, it suggests a lack of confidence in oneself and one's place in life. Feel proud of the journey and experiences you've had; they make you who you are.
