What TV Series Do I Wish Would Go Away?
I can’t pinpoint any current shows that I feel qualified to demand should be removed from airwaves or streaming platforms. However, there are some series that have truly overstayed their welcome, much to my chagrin.
The Dawn of Disgust: Married with Children
Looking back, my feelings towards Married with Children were always negative. The show’s cynical and often offensive humor about family life was off-putting from the very first episode. It’s hard to understand how such a controversial and snide show could maintain its relevance for so long. Sadly, media ratings menus numerous voices, and Nielsen ratings don’t include mine.
Overstaying the Welcome: The Bachelor/Bachelorette Series, Real Housewives, SNL, Big Brother, Survivor
From the Bachelor/Bachelorette series to Real Housewives of any city, Saturday Night Live (SNL), Big Brother, and Survivor, these programs have become a monotonous sight. Despite their popularity, they often lack originality and substance, relying on repetitive tropes and unoriginal storylines.
Nightmare on Star Trek Street: Netflix’s Star Trek Shows
Netflix’s take on Star Trek has been a source of disappointment and even insult to the franchise. Shows like Discovery, Picard, and Lower Decks not only fail to live up to the legacy of the original series but also tread dangerous waters by mocking a beloved franchise. Their abominations don’t merely disappoint but outright disgrace the memories of Gene Roddenberry and the episodes of the classic series.
An Unfortunate Love: The Good Doctor
On the flip side, there are series I genuinely love, such as The Good Doctor. This show has terrific actors delivering wonderful dialogue in pursuit of compassionate storylines and compelling characters. Despite the accolades, it’s oddly memorable for me that my second favorite on this list is Tosh.0. I wouldn’t be proud of my affection for this show, but admitting my preference for it speaks to its unique charm.
Perfect Harmony: A Show Worth Lamenting
There are other shows I genuinely admire, but one that truly stands out is Perfect Harmony. This genuinely funny, warm-hearted, and fair-minded sitcom broke new ground in treating southern and small-town life with authenticity and affection. The show managed to avoid the usual clichés of honking rules and Beverly Hillbillies-style humor. It’s a standout in a genre that often misses the mark.
While Perfect Harmony offered a fresh and thoughtful portrayal of southern life, it likely won’t last. Like People of Earth, it may be doomed to an early demise due to limited audience reach. The show’s quality and humor are undeniable, as proven by its critical success. However, it might not satisfy the masses seeking more conventional entertainment.
The End Game
To conclude, while there are shows I truly dislike and hope will fade into obscurity, there are also shows I genuinely admire and enjoy. It's a mixed bag, but the ones that leave a lasting impression must be cherished, even when hoping for their departure might seem noble.
