Stupidest Cop Quips: True Stories of Humorous Encounters

Every driver has had their share of interactions with law enforcement, some more memorable than others. Here are two truly amusing instances of interactions with the police, featuring cop quips that left both the drivers and their passengers in stitches.

Stupidest Stopping Quiz

Back in the days I was in the Air Force, I found myself in an unfamiliar part of the base, a wide four-lane road lined with trees and no signs of activity. As I approached an intersection, I noticed a Security Police truck, and knowing that receiving traffic tickets was a strict no-no, I immediately checked my speed. It seemed I was safe, but a few minutes later, a police officer in a gumball (speeding radar) was behind me, pulling me over.

His first words: “What does S-T-O-P spell?” On closer inspection, I noticed that the four-lane highway had a stop sign for the two-lane road, hidden by overgrown trees. I wasn’t speeding, and hiding a stop sign behind trees is no excuse for a police officer. But the officer asked this question, to which I responded, “You should ask your partner.”

Cop Dog and the Vintage Car

My boyfriend, Peter, and I were coming home from a fancy dress party in Australia, where ‘fancy dress’ means wearing a costume, like Halloween Black Tie. As we were driving, a police car followed us. When Peter pulled over, the engine of his vintage 'muscle car,' a well-restored vintage V8, backfired loudly, making the smoke visible through the police lights.

The policeman asked to see Peter’s license, which had his previous address. Realizing this, the officer thought Peter wasn’t from the area. He then asked Peter to perform a breath test, remarking, 'You’re not from around here son,' without realizing we were both in costumes. When Peter passed the test, the cop continued to question him, assuming he didn't fit the 'image' of the neighborhood citizens.

Peter’s response, ''I’m dropping my girlfriend home,” led the cop to shine his torch into the car and see me. I too was dressed in costume. I backed Peter up, saying, ‘Peter is dropping me home.’ Then, when asked about our home address, I simply pointed to my parents' house, truthfully, and proved it by opening the front door and switching the light on.

Thankfully, the police realized they had no charges to pursue and were amused by the situation. We were relieved that my parents weren't home at the time, but we had a good laugh about it afterward.

Conclusion

These encounters with police officers highlight the humor and sometimes the absurdity of everyday interactions. Both incidents are a testament to the fact that even when things go wrong, there's often a way to handle the situation with humor and wit. Remember, knowledge is power, and sometimes a little cleverness can help defuse a tense situation and leave everyone smiling.
