Expanding Horizons: The Resurgence of Socialism and the Perspective of Millennials
The Growing Appeal of Socialism Among Young People
Public opinion surveys across the Western world confirm a growing sympathy toward socialism. The slogans of equality, non-discrimination, and social justice resonate powerfully among younger generations. This sentiment is further fueled by the increasingly popular concept of democratic socialism, which suggests a transition from capitalism without the violent upheaval once envisioned by Karl Marx.
Karl Marx's The Communist Manifesto was absolutely clear on the first step of the socialist revolution: the violent destruction of the bourgeoisie, or all business owners. Unfortunately, this step has often involved loss of life. However, there are some exceptions to this pattern, such as the Communist Party dictatorship experienced in my own life. This was a regime that came to power without a violent overthrow, but its implementation of progressive policies often included violence against dissenters.
Collapse of the Iron Curtain and Lack of Awareness
Two generations have grown up in a world without the Iron Curtain, blissfully unaware of the horrors experienced by their predecessors under communist regimes. Many youngsters today don't have vivid memories of conditions under such regimes, nor have they seen the tragic images of refugees who were persecuted under communism.
Conditions in a Communist Dictatorship
I spent 20 years in a communist state where the transition to power was achieved without a revolution. It mirrored the current trends of cancel culture and de-platforming in my current country. The government worked with a minority faction, supported by media propaganda campaigns that removed 'unreliable' individuals from government and other institutions, while building armed militias quietly.
Those who openly criticized the government were often imprisoned on trumped-up charges. When the government deemed it opportune, a well-coordinated coup was staged, eliminating several non-communist ministers, one of whom was murdered. The government then maintained absolute power, and the public was largely suppressed with minimal resistance. Some business owners managed to escape to the West, while others saved themselves by 'giving' their businesses to the state, although this was not always successful, and many faced imprisonment. The film Milada provides a vivid portrayal of this period.
Understanding the Scary Reality
The socialist movement is growing again, and this phenomenon is explained by the following insightful statement from Sindre Rudshaug on Quora:
“Socialism is a monster that is hard to keep down because every coming generation only sees the cloak, not the dagger. The cloak is compassion for the poor; the dagger is all the violence the left is willing to unleash on us.”
Despite the noble goals of socialism, its implementation has historically been fraught with violence and oppression. Younger generations may lack awareness of these realities, making the transition from capitalism to socialism seem more attractive than it truly is.
Conclusion: A League of Their Own
While the appeal of socialism is clear, it is important to consider the historical and ethical implications. As Sindre Rudshaug points out, younger generations should be aware that the 'cloak' of social justice conceals a 'dagger' of violence. Understanding the past can help navigate the complexities of the future, ensuring a more ethical and equitable society.
