An Unforgettable Journey: My Experience at IIT Bombay

How Has Been My IIT B Experience

Hey! I hope you are doing well. I have completed two years at IIT Bombay so I believe I am qualified to answer this question. I will provide a detailed account that will make you feel like you were right there with me.

First of all, I will say that I have spent the best two years of my life there. It was an amazing experience to be there.

When we prepare for the entrance exam for IITs and NITs, we put our soul and heart into the exam preparation. So is it worth it to prepare this hard for just an exam?

Let me tell you, it’s fucking worth it.

When you get up for the morning class at 8.30 AM and travel from the hostel to the Lecture Hall Complex, a place where lectures are delivered, and see students going to classes, you feel so satisfied. You feel like you are also an IITian now. This feeling is enough to motivate you to do your best there.

Campus Life

IITB has one of the best campuses among all IITs, so I lived my best campus life here. In the autumn semester, I experienced a lot of rain. The campus, especially Powai Lake, is an iconic sight. The view from the hostel terrace is breathtaking, and the IIT entrance deserves to be seen. In the spring semester, I fell in love with the pleasant environment of Mumbai, which is much milder than the harsh winters of North India. Other than this, cats, snakes, lizards, pigeons, and even sometimes leopards can be seen here. Cats are very friendly, and you can play with them and even pet them.

Places for Hangout in Campus

There are many places to visit that make your mind fresh. For example, H18 and H17 terrace, Sameer Hills, the Boat House, Old SAC, Aroma, H2 canteen, and all girls' hostels. H11 is also a popular hangout spot. Here are some interesting pictures:

Sport Facilities

There are fantastic sport facilities there where one can learn to play any type of sport, such as cricket, volleyball, basketball, football, and even indoor sports like tennis. There is a proper outdoor playground called Gymkhana Ground, where one can play any sport of their choice. I played cricket, volleyball, and basketball, and sometimes even played disc golf, which is really very interesting and easy to play. Here are some pictures:

Hostels

There are 18 hostels in IITB. I resided in H18, one of the best hostels. You feel like you are at home, and the rooms are fully furnished. The food in IITB is so good that I really miss it when I am at home. We get eggs, omlets, bread-butter-jam, tea, coffee, parathas, and milk with Bournvita, Moosli, and pak chocos. People who go out of their homes for the first time do not get satisfied with the food but believe me, IITB's food is so good that people who go to their homes in holidays miss it. And one more interesting thing is the canteen food is very tasty and cheap. 50 rupees are enough for one time meal here.

Every hostel has its gala dinner once in a semester in which you get special dinner. There is a music room in every hostel, a TV room, and yes, high-speed internet.

In the hostel rooms, based on seniority, students are provided with single and double occupancy rooms. People here are so good; I found the best people of my life here. Alcohol and smoking are common here, and girls do visit the boys' hostel, so it’s a chill environment.

Cultural Festivals

All festivals are celebrated here. If you haven’t heard about MOOD INDIGO, you are missing a lot. MOOD INDIGO is Asia’s biggest college cultural festival celebrated on the IITB campus. It’s a 4-day festival where a lot of fun activities are done. More famous stand-up comedians, Bollywood celebrities, and singers come and entertain students.

The festival I enjoyed the most is Holi. During Holi, all the guys end up losing at least one T-shirt or shirt because we get covered in colors, water, and sometimes mud too. Here is a picture taken on our department's traditional day. Once a year, everyone dresses in their traditional clothes and enjoys a special dinner together.

Academics

IITs are known for their academics. Professors are highly qualified here, and many have spent more than 10 years in foreign for pursuing their PhD and Postdoc. So you can imagine their intellectual level, but at the same time, they are very sweet and always ready to help students with both academic and non-academic issues.

Obviously, one has to devote a decent time for study every day to do well in semester because professors evaluate students continuously through quizzes, mid-sem, tutorials, and End-sem.

Life in IIT is not so simple; I really worked hard to obtain a good CPI there. So if you are coming to IITB, don’t have the mindset that you would not study here. You will have to study here, and it is challenging but rewarding.

Have a look at me here in the classroom. This is me, dropping a candid pic because if you get motivated by this post and somehow reach IIT and then see me somewhere, say thanks to me!

Thanks!
